House subcommittees to hold hearings on Truman Scholarship bias and student privacy

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The House Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development, chaired by Rep. Burgess Owens (R-UT), will hold a hearing titled "Public Funds, Private Politics: Examining Bias in the Truman Scholarship Program" at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Witnesses scheduled to testify include Dr. Frederick Hess, Senior Fellow and Director of Education Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute; Ms. Jennifer Kabbany, Editor-in-Chief of The College Fix; Ms. Ashley Harrington, Senior Policy Counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund; and Mr. Adam Kissel, Visiting Fellow at the Center for Education Policy with the Heritage Foundation.

The event is open to members of the press and will be available via live stream on the Committee’s YouTube page.

Later that day, at 2:00 p.m., the Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Subcommittee chaired by Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA) will conduct a hearing titled “Safeguarding Student Privacy and Parental Rights: A Review of FERPA and PPRA.” This session will also be held in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Testifying witnesses for this hearing are Mr. Matt Sharp, Senior Counsel and Director of the Center for Public Policy at Alliance Defending Freedom; Mrs. Laura Powell, Founder and President of Californians for Good Governance; Mr. Cody Venzke, Senior Policy Counsel with the American Civil Liberties Union; and Mrs. Deborah Figliola, a retired secondary special education and English teacher from Harrisonburg City Public Schools.

This second hearing is also open to press attendance and will be streamed live on the Committee’s YouTube channel.
