Jefferson County woman indicted for arson at Birmingham apartment complex

A Jefferson County resident has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly setting fire to an apartment unit, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona.

Shun’derrika Kimberly Peoples, 20, of Birmingham, Alabama, faces one count of arson in connection with the incident at The Union at Cooper Hill apartment complex on August 25, 2025.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) together with the Birmingham Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney W. Lee Gilmer is leading the prosecution.

“An indictment contains only charges. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty,” stated the release.
