Two Birmingham residents indicted for arson and terrorism-related conspiracy at Walmart

A federal grand jury has indicted two Birmingham residents on charges related to a fire set inside a local business. U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona announced that Lillian Jayne Colburn, 26, and Mercutio Terrell Southall, 41, face charges of arson and conspiring to provide material support to terrorists.

According to the indictment filed in U.S. District Court, the alleged incident took place at the Walmart Supercenter on Lakeshore Parkway in Homewood, Alabama on August 25, 2025.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation into the case with assistance from both the Homewood Police Department and the Irondale Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney W. Lee Gilmer is handling prosecution duties.

“An indictment contains only charges. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty,” stated officials in the announcement.
