Cedar Rapids man receives 35-year sentence for drug trafficking near school

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

A Cedar Rapids man has been sentenced to 35 years in federal prison for distributing methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine. Cordarryl Cortez Smith, 38, pleaded guilty on March 3, 2025, to one count of distribution of a controlled substance near a protected location.

According to court records, law enforcement officers purchased methamphetamine from Smith twice in March 2023 in Cedar Rapids. One transaction took place within 1,000 feet of a school. On March 22, 2023, officers stopped Smith’s car as it was returning to Cedar Rapids. Although the vehicle belonged to Smith, it was being driven by his brother and another individual while Smith traveled in a separate car. Officers found about an ounce of cocaine and approximately nine pounds of methamphetamine in the trunk of Smith’s car. In November 2023, authorities again bought cocaine from Smith several times.

Smith was sentenced by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams to 420 months’ imprisonment and must also serve a ten-year term of supervised release following his prison sentence. There is no parole in the federal system.

Smith remains in the custody of the United States Marshal until he is transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Adam J. Vander Stoep and investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Task Force, which includes the DEA; Linn County Sheriff's Office; Cedar Rapids Police Department; Marion Police Department; and Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.
