U.S. Department of Labor investigators have found that Hyoungwon E&C America Inc., an engineering and construction company, exposed its workers to safety hazards. This conclusion follows a probe into a worker's death at the Hanwa Q Cells Georgia Inc. plant in White, Georgia.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued the company a citation for serious violations under the Occupational Safety and Health Act’s general duty clause. The violations include failing to protect employees from asphyxiation hazards associated with nitrogen gas and not providing adequate information and training on these hazards. As a result, the company faces proposed penalties totaling $20,522.
Hyoungwon E&C America Inc. has 15 business days from receiving the citations to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. Penalties may be adjusted during this process.
For updates on inspection or penalty status, OSHA advises checking their establishment search page periodically. More information on workplace safety programs is available on OSHA’s website, where employers can also find compliance assistance resources.
