The U.S. Department of Labor has allocated $1 million in grant funding to aid disaster-relief jobs and provide employment and training services for Alaska residents affected by Typhoon Halong. The typhoon's remnants, from October 8 to October 13, 2025, led to severe storms impacting Alaska's western, northern, and southwestern coasts. Wind gusts over 100 mph resulted in storm surges and flooding that damaged infrastructure and homes.
Alaska’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management reported the evacuation of 1,400 residents from 49 communities to Bethel, with some later moved to Anchorage due to limited emergency housing. The Federal Emergency Management Agency declared a major disaster for the storms, allowing Alaska to seek federal recovery assistance for areas including the Northwest Arctic Borough.
This Disaster Recovery National Dislocated Worker Grant will enable the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development to offer temporary jobs for cleanup and recovery efforts. Additionally, it will provide employment services for individuals evacuated from uninhabitable areas until they can return home.
Supported by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014, these grants assist areas experiencing significant economic disruptions by offering resources beyond what is locally available.
