Over the past two days, Special Envoy for Peace Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Ukrainian Secretary of National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov and Chief of General Staff General Andriy Hnatov. The meetings focused on developing a credible path toward lasting peace in Ukraine.
The group held their sixth meeting in the last two weeks. According to Secretary Umerov, "Ukraine’s priority is securing a settlement that protects its independence and sovereignty, ensures the safety of Ukrainians, and provides a stable foundation for a prosperous democratic future."
Participants discussed outcomes from recent talks between the American delegation and Russian representatives, exploring steps that could help end the conflict. Both American and Ukrainian officials agreed on a framework for security arrangements and considered deterrence measures needed to maintain peace.
The parties noted that meaningful progress depends on Russia's willingness to make serious commitments toward long-term peace, including actions to de-escalate tensions and stop violence. They also reviewed plans for Ukraine’s post-war recovery, joint economic initiatives between the United States and Ukraine, and projects aimed at long-term reconstruction.
Both sides emphasized that ending hostilities and taking concrete steps toward ceasefire are essential to prevent further aggression. These actions would also support Ukraine’s redevelopment plan intended to strengthen the country after the war.
The discussions are set to continue tomorrow as both parties work toward advancing these objectives.
