U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), who chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, spoke on the Senate floor about a Republican bill aimed at reducing health care costs by giving money directly to families. The proposed legislation, called the Health Care Freedom for Patients Act, was introduced with Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID), chair of the Senate Finance Committee.
The Senate is scheduled to vote on this bill on Thursday, December 11th. According to Cassidy, the legislation offers an alternative to what he described as the Democrats’ approach of directing taxpayer funds to insurance companies while leaving families responsible for significant out-of-pocket expenses.
“Republicans want to put thousands of dollars in your pocket to cover out-of-pocket costs,” said Dr. Cassidy. “Democrats want to send $26 billion to insurance companies for plans that require you to pay $6,000 before insurance kicks in. Let’s give power to the patient, not profit to the insurance company.”
Cassidy has previously urged Congress in various committee hearings and on the Senate floor to address rising health care costs and work together on solutions that would lower health insurance expenses for families.
