House subcommittees schedule hearing with tech firms on cybersecurity threats

Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Chairman Andy Ogles (R-TN) and Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability Chairman Josh Brecheen (R-OK) have announced a joint hearing scheduled for Wednesday, December 17. The session will focus on the impact of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and hyperscale cloud infrastructure on U.S. cybersecurity defenses. It will also address how these technologies may enhance the capabilities of foreign adversaries, including the People’s Republic of China.

Last month, House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Andrew R. Garbarino (R-NY), along with Chairmen Ogles and Brecheen, sent letters to Anthropic, Google, and Quantum Xchange requesting testimony from representatives of each company. This request followed a report by Anthropic that concluded with high confidence that a PRC state-sponsored cyber actor used the company’s AI systems to conduct an autonomous cyber espionage campaign with minimal human oversight.

“We face a grave threat from foreign adversaries like Communist China as AI and quantum computing supercharges their efforts to hack American Citizens,” said Subcommittee Chairman Ogles. “America must stay ahead of these threats and continue leading in technological innovation while simultaneously defending against cyber warfare. I look forward to hearing from industry leaders to fully understand both the risks and opportunities these emerging technologies present to U.S. cybersecurity.”

“China is America’s most serious foreign security threat, and we have long been aware of their efforts to undermine the services we rely on and exploit the sensitive data of Americans,” said Subcommittee Chairman Brecheen. “The Chinese Communist Party’s newest efforts to weaponize AI and other emerging technologies to spread its malign influence on U.S. soil should alarm every member of Congress, agency, business, and American. This hearing will be a great opportunity to hear from the private sector on how we can work together to stand up to the CCP and mitigate cyber threats to our homeland.”

The hearing is titled “The Quantum, AI, and Cloud Landscape: Examining Opportunities, Vulnerabilities, and the Future of Cybersecurity.” It will take place at 10:00 AM ET in room 310 Cannon House Office Building.

Witnesses scheduled include Dr. Logan Graham from Anthropic PBC; Mr. Royal Hansen from Google LLC; Mr. Eddy Zervigon from Quantum Xchange; and Mr. Michael Coates from Seven Hill Ventures.

The event will be livestreamed on YouTube and is open to both the public and press members who are congressionally credentialed.
