On December 19, 2025, the President signed H.R. 165, known as the “Wounded Knee Massacre Memorial and Sacred Site Act,” into law. This legislation requires the Secretary of the Interior to take steps to transfer certain land in South Dakota into restricted fee status for the benefit of the Oglala and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribes.
According to the White House, "H.R. 165, the 'Wounded Knee Massacre Memorial and Sacred Site Act,' ... directs the Secretary of the Interior to take actions necessary to place certain land in South Dakota into restricted fee status for the Oglala and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribes."
