Consumers Supply Distributing, LLC, based in Sioux City, Iowa, has issued a recall for certain 4-pound bags of Country Vet Biscuits – Original Meaty Flavor and Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits – Meaty Flavor with Chicken due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall affects products sold in retail stores across Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Montana, and Nebraska.
According to the company, "Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products."
Symptoms of Salmonella infection in humans may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. In rare cases it can lead to more serious conditions such as arterial infections or arthritis. The press release states: "Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers."
Pets that have consumed contaminated food may show signs such as lethargy and diarrhea or bloody diarrhea. The statement notes: "Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms please contact your veterinarian."
The recalled Country Vet Biscuits – Original Meaty Flavor are packaged in 4-pound bags with UPC 899623000463; lot #40906513 appears on the front along with a best by expiration date of 09/06/2026 also stamped on the front. Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits – Meaty Flavor with Chicken are also in 4-pound bags (UPC 840227340691), marked with lot #40906513 on the back and a best by expiration date of 09/06/2026 stamped on the back.
No illnesses related to this recall have been reported so far.
The recall follows routine sampling by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which detected Salmonella bacteria in finished products. According to Consumers Supply Distributing: "The recall was the result of a routine sampling program by the FDA which revealed that the finished products contained the bacteria. The company has ceased the production and distribution of the lot number as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem."
