The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has announced the end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia. The decision, made public by Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, will take effect on March 17, 2026.

“Temporary means temporary. Country conditions in Somalia have improved to the point that it no longer meets the law’s requirement for Temporary Protected Status,” said Secretary Noem. “Further, allowing Somali nationals to remain temporarily in the United States is contrary to our national interests. We are putting Americans first.”

According to current policy, TPS designations must be reviewed before they expire to assess whether the original conditions justifying protection still exist. In this case, DHS determined that Somalia no longer qualifies for continued TPS.

Somali nationals currently residing in the United States under TPS who do not hold another legal status are advised to use the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s CBP Home mobile app to report their departure from the country. The app offers a secure way for individuals to arrange self-deportation and provides support such as a plane ticket, an exit bonus, and potential eligibility for future legal immigration.
