Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) spoke on the House Floor in support of H.R. 6359, known as the Pregnant Students' Rights Act. The proposed legislation aims to ensure that pregnant students are informed about their rights and protections while pursuing an education.

"I rise today in support of the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act—legislation that affirms a simple but powerful principle: expecting mothers should be encouraged to pursue their education like any other student," Walberg said during his remarks.

He noted that pregnant students often do not receive accurate or adequate guidance regarding their options for continuing education while pregnant. According to Walberg, some women feel pressured to end pregnancies or fear academic setbacks, despite existing federal protections.

The bill would require educational institutions to provide clear information about accommodations available to pregnant and parenting students. These include excused absences for medical reasons, opportunities to make up missed work, and safeguards against discrimination or retaliation.

"More specifically, this bill requires information to be emailed to students at least once each academic year and appear in student handbooks, at orientation, at student health or counseling centers, and on the institution’s website," Walberg explained.

He emphasized that ensuring students know their rights can help them remain enrolled and succeed academically. Walberg also said the measure is designed not to place additional burdens on colleges but rather to improve communication and transparency.

"This is a commonsense, compassionate measure that promotes transparency and ensures pregnant students have the support they need to create a better future for themselves and their child," he stated. "I urge my colleagues to join me in supporting the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act and stand up for the dignity, opportunity, and educational success of every student."
