Navitas Organics has announced a voluntary recall of select lots of its 8oz Organic Chia Seeds due to concerns about possible Salmonella contamination. The decision follows a recall initiated by the company’s chia seed supplier.

The affected product was distributed across the United States through retailers such as Whole Foods Market and online platforms including Amazon. The recall specifically involves Navitas Organics - Organic Chia Seeds, 8oz, with UPC 858847000284. Lot codes included in the recall begin with “W” and are printed on the back of each bag above the nutritional information. The specific lot codes and their best-by dates are:

At this time, there have been no reports of Salmonella found in Navitas Organics’ products, nor have any illnesses or adverse medical events been reported or identified. No other products from Navitas Organics are impacted by this recall.

"Navitas has provided Organic Chia Seeds to our customers for more than 20 years. Providing safe, healthy food for our customers is why we have been in business this long and it’s why we are recalling this product today,” said Ira Haber, CEO.

Salmonella infection can cause serious health issues, particularly for young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream and lead to more severe conditions.

Consumers who possess any of the recalled chia seeds should not consume them. Instead, they are advised to open the bag, discard its contents, and dispose of both seeds and packaging so that they cannot be used again.

Customers may return affected products to their place of purchase for a refund or contact Navitas Organics at 855-215-5702 between 8am and 8pm ET Monday through Friday for further assistance or product replacement.

The company is collaborating closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regarding this matter. "We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience caused by this recall," stated Navitas Organics.
