Today marks the birthday of President William McKinley, who served as the 25th President of the United States. A statement issued to commemorate the occasion described McKinley as “a true American trailblazer and titan of American greatness, who protected our people; expanded our blessings; and secured unprecedented growth, prosperity, and sovereignty for our beloved Nation.”
McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio. His early life was shaped by values such as faith, duty, and respect. After serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, he represented Ohio in the United States House of Representatives. During his time in Congress, he authored and passed the McKinley Tariff of 1890. According to the statement, this legislation was “a bold legislative effort to protect American workers against foreign exploitation.” He later became governor of Ohio and gained national attention for supporting workers.
Elected President in 1896, McKinley led the country during a period that included victory in the Spanish-American War. The message noted that he “heroically led our country to victory... advancing the blessings of freedom beyond our shores.” His administration also emphasized tariffs as a means to support economic growth.
President McKinley was assassinated in 1901. The statement said: “Tragically, President McKinley’s devotion to America First principles ultimately cost him his life when, in 1901, he was viciously assassinated by a deranged left-wing anarchist. To this day, he lives on in our hearts as a martyr of American freedom.”
The message also referenced recent actions taken by the current administration: “In honor of President McKinley’s historic legacy, on my first day returning to office, I proudly restored the rightful name of Mount McKinley to America’s highest peak.” It further stated that trade policies are being reestablished with an emphasis on American investment and productivity.
On what would have been McKinley's 183rd birthday—and during celebrations marking 250 years since American independence—the statement concluded: “we honor his memory, we remember his courage, and we renew our resolve to protect our workers, to reach further, aim higher, and achieve the full promise and glory of the American Dream.”
