Troy Rivetti named U.S. attorney for Western District of Pennsylvania

Troy Rivetti has been appointed as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania. The appointment was made by Attorney General Pamela Bondi on January 28, 2026. Rivetti was sworn into office by United States District Court Judge J. Nicholas Ranjan.

Rivetti has been leading the office since the resignation of former U.S. Attorney Eric Olshan in January 2025. He initially served as Acting United States Attorney until November 2025 and then continued to lead as First Assistant United States Attorney, a position he held before becoming Acting U.S. Attorney.

Rivetti’s career with the Department of Justice spans nearly three decades, during which he has held several leadership roles within the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He previously served as Acting United States Attorney from February 2023 to June 2023 and as First Assistant United States Attorney from November 2021 to January 2025. From 2019 to 2021, he was Chief of the Criminal Division. Rivetti joined the office in 1997.

During his time as a federal prosecutor, Rivetti focused mainly on investigating and prosecuting violent crime cases, including those involving large-scale drug trafficking organizations and firearms offenses. Notably, he co-led the investigation and prosecution of United States v. Robert Bowers, who committed the deadliest antisemitic mass shooting in U.S. history. Rivetti served as first chair for the trial team throughout jury selection, trial, and sentencing phases.

Rivetti holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dickinson College and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University. After law school, he worked for five years as a litigation associate at a Pittsburgh law firm before clerking for two years for Judge D. Brooks Smith.
