A Mexican national who was living unlawfully in the United States has been sentenced to federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm after evading supervision for over a year.

Alfredo Terrero-Ortega, 28, received a sentence of 37 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release.

Court documents state that on January 31, 2023, Terrero-Ortega was released from the Oregon Department of Corrections to post-prison supervision in the community, despite an ICE detainer. If officials had honored the detainer, he would have been deported to Mexico upon his release.

Within five months of his release, in June 2023, Terrero-Ortega threatened to kill a woman in Oregon and pushed her to the ground while she was holding her baby. He also strangled her. After the incident was reported, he fled from state supervision. On November 7, 2024, U.S. Marshals arrested him in Portland. At the time of arrest, he had a loaded 9mm pistol in a black satchel along with methamphetamine, zip lock baggies, a phone, handwritten credit card information, and documents associated with his girlfriend.

A federal grand jury indicted Terrero-Ortega on December 17, 2024 for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He pleaded guilty to this charge on October 2, 2025.

The U.S. Marshals Service conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Leah K. Bolstad prosecuted the case.
