A Brookhaven resident, David Tiler Castillo, was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $928,500 in restitution after being convicted of wire fraud. The sentencing took place on January 13, 2026.
Court documents show that Castillo, age 23, misled investors by claiming he was investing their funds in marketable securities such as stocks. In reality, only about $3,000 of the collected $928,500 was actually invested; the remainder was used for Castillo’s personal expenses, including purchasing vehicles.
The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney J.E. Baxter Kruger for the Southern District of Mississippi along with U.S. Secret Service Special Agent in Charge Patrick Davis, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch, and Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson.
The investigation into Castillo’s actions involved several agencies: the United States Secret Service, the Securities Division of the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office, and the Cyber Crime Division of the Mississippi Attorney General's Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Dave Fulcher prosecuted the case.
