Richmond man sentenced to nearly four years for illegal firearm possession

A Richmond man has been sentenced to three years and ten months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Court documents state that on January 11, 2025, Raheem Bennie Smith, also known as Too-Too, age 44, was found asleep at the wheel of a running vehicle at an intersection in Richmond. A police officer woke Smith by tapping on his window and asked him to put the car in park. During the interaction, the officer saw a firearm on the front passenger seat and told Smith not to reach for it. Another officer opened the passenger door and recovered the loaded handgun. Smith was then arrested. Police also found cocaine in his pants.

Smith had previous convictions including possession of cocaine, eluding police, repeatedly driving with a suspended or revoked license, and second-degree murder. As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Washington Field Division and the Richmond Police Department investigated this case.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine E. Groover prosecuted the case. She is also an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney with the Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney Office.

"This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.
