John Calvin Harris, 29, of the District of Columbia, was sentenced to 36 months in prison for illegal firearm possession and drug trafficking. The sentence was handed down by Chief Judge James E. Boasberg in U.S. District Court. In addition to the prison term, Harris will serve three years of supervised release.
Harris pleaded guilty on September 18, 2025, to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon and possession with intent to distribute amphetamine and cocaine base.
According to court records, police officers from the Metropolitan Police Department were patrolling the 4000 block of Minnesota Avenue NE on June 30, 2025, when they observed Harris sitting in the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle. Officers identified him as being wanted on an active warrant from Maryland.
Upon arresting Harris, officers recovered a loaded Glock 29 pistol from his waistband. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of more than 45 grams of cocaine base and over 30 grams of amphetamines.
Harris had previously been convicted in 2023 for possession with intent to distribute oxycodone and received probation. As a result, he was barred from possessing firearms.
The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Caelainn Carney prosecuted the case.
