House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), along with Subcommittee on the Administrative State, Regulatory Reform, and Antitrust Chairman Scott Fitzgerald (R-WI) and Subcommittee on Oversight Chairman Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), have issued subpoenas to eight health insurance companies. The subpoenas seek information regarding fraud-protection measures related to Obamacare subsidies.
The companies receiving the subpoenas are Blue Shield of California, Centene Corporation, CVS Health, Elevance Health, GuideWell, Health Care Service Corporation, Kaiser Permanente, and Oscar Health. According to the committee chairmen, these insurers did not fully comply with earlier voluntary requests for documents.
A recent Government Accountability Office report identified billions of dollars in unreconciled Obamacare subsidies each year and cited instances where tens of thousands of Social Security Numbers were potentially vulnerable to fraud.
In June 2025, the Trump Administration introduced the Marketplace Integrity and Affordability Rule intended to limit fraud associated with Obamacare. However, a judge appointed during President Biden’s administration stayed this rule’s implementation after finding that it violated the Administrative Procedure Act. This court decision is currently under appeal.
The House Judiciary Committee was established in 1813 as one of the oldest standing committees in the U.S. House of Representatives. Its responsibilities include overseeing justice in federal courts and law enforcement agencies such as the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security. The committee also manages legislation involving constitutional rights, civil liberties, immigration policy, antitrust laws, and reviews proposed amendments to the Constitution. More details about its role can be found at its official website.
