The United States has announced new visa restrictions on 18 Iranian officials and leaders in the telecommunications industry, as well as their immediate family members. This action is a response to recent events in Iran during nationwide protests that took place in December 2025 and January 2026.
According to the U.S. Department of State, the Iranian government responded to peaceful demonstrations with violence and repression. Authorities imposed a near-total internet shutdown across the country, which severely limited independent reporting on alleged abuses and isolated Iranians from international communication. Despite the passage of time since those protests, restrictions on basic freedoms for Iranians reportedly continue.
Secretary Rubio implemented these measures under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. The policy targets individuals who are believed to be complicit in serious human rights violations, particularly those related to suppressing freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. With this latest action, a total of 58 individuals have been targeted by similar visa restrictions.
A statement from the U.S. administration reiterated its position: "The United States will continue to stand with the right of the Iranian people to free expression. We reaffirm our unwavering support for Iranians and their demand for peace and dignity. We will continue to use all tools available to expose and promote accountability for the abuses by Iranian regime officials and other individuals."
These actions reflect ongoing efforts by the United States government to hold accountable those responsible for inhibiting fundamental rights in Iran.
