House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairman Brian Babin and Research and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Jay Obernolte have asked the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct a thorough review of current federal and state laws and regulations related to artificial intelligence (AI).
The request comes as AI technologies play an increasing role in economic and national security matters. Both federal and state governments have introduced various measures such as legislation, executive orders, agency guidance, and oversight mechanisms that affect how AI systems are created and used.
In their letter to the GAO, Babin and Obernolte stated: "Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a transformative technology with the potential to both improve and disrupt society." They highlighted that regulatory efforts across agencies and states have led to a complex environment for AI development.
The Chairmen have asked the GAO to examine "the current laws and regulations governing AI at both the federal and state levels," including those specifically targeting AI as well as existing statutes that may apply to these systems.
This review aims to provide Congress with detailed information about the present regulatory framework for AI. The findings are expected to help lawmakers make informed decisions about future policies concerning artificial intelligence.
