Honduran man sentenced in Louisiana for illegal reentry after prior deportation

WALTER OMAR CASCO-LOPEZ, a 36-year-old Honduran national, was sentenced in New Orleans on February 4, 2026, for illegally reentering the United States after deportation. U.S. District Judge Greg Gerard Guidry imposed a sentence of twenty-one months in prison, followed by one year of supervised release and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

Court documents indicate that CASCO-LOPEZ had previously been deported from the United States on October 12, 2011. After serving his sentence, he will be transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation back to Honduras.

The prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative aimed at deterring illegal immigration and combating transnational criminal organizations through coordinated efforts with federal agencies such as the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).

U.S. Attorney David I. Courcelle acknowledged the investigative work carried out by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Customs Enforcement Border Protection. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis of the General Crimes Unit.

"This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to deter illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect communities from violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines enforcement efforts through coordination with the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN)."
