U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, who serves as Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released a statement following the Supreme Court's decision to strike down President Trump’s tariff policy.
Durbin criticized the former president’s approach, stating: “Despite his promises to ‘lower costs on Day One’ and that his tariffs would somehow ‘liberate the American taxpayer,’ in reality, the misguided Trump Tariff Tax on goods imported into the United States created a burden on families and businesses. Any suspicion that these tariffs were legitimate under existing law disappeared when President Trump announced a dramatic increase on Swiss tariffs because he did not like their leader’s attitude.”
He further commented on the court’s ruling: “Today’s ruling is a win for the American people and, in a rare instance, shows the Supreme Court can use its constitutional authority to stop the corruption and chaos of the Trump presidency.”
The Senate Judiciary Committee plays an important role in shaping constitutional protections and public safety across the country through its legislative and oversight functions, as described by its official website. The committee also reviews legislation, oversees federal law enforcement agencies, evaluates judicial nominations, and influences civil rights matters nationwide. It is led by a chairperson and includes senators from both major political parties.
The committee operates out of Washington, D.C., with broad influence over federal law and judicial issues throughout the United States. As a standing committee of the U.S. Senate, it holds authority over various judicial and legal matters.
