William G. Berger sworn in as special assistant U.S. attorney for Northern District

On February 3, 2026, William G. Berger, an Assistant District Attorney from Saratoga County, was sworn in as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney (SAUSA) for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of New York. This appointment allows Berger to prosecute federal cases while continuing his work as an ADA.

Several other Assistant District Attorneys have also recently taken on SAUSA roles. These include First ADA Michael T. Johnson from Herkimer County; Chief ADA J. Sam Rodgers from Madison County; ADAs Manpreet Kaur and Kathleen Hofmann from Montgomery County; and Chief ADA Christopher Bednarski along with Senior ADAs Sara Fitzpatrick and Alphonse L. Williams III from Onondaga County.

First Assistant United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III commented on Berger’s appointment: “We are proud to welcome William Berger as a Special Assistant United States Attorney. His experience as an Assistant District Attorney in Saratoga County and his commitment to public safety will strengthen our efforts to combat violent crime and complex criminal organizations throughout the Northern District of New York. Partnerships like this exemplify the strong collaboration between state and federal law enforcement, ensuring that we use every available resource to protect our communities and uphold the rule of law.”

Saratoga County District Attorney Brett Eby also highlighted the importance of such collaborations: “Our ongoing collaboration with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York is essential to our mission of dismantling complex criminal enterprises that threaten the safety of our communities. By working hand-in-hand with our federal partners, we can leverage shared resources, intelligence, and expertise to pursue justice more effectively and keep the people of Upstate New York safe. These strategic partnerships strengthen every level of law enforcement.”

The role of SAUSAs is designed to enhance cooperation between local district attorneys’ offices and federal prosecutors by allowing local prosecutors to handle cases at both levels under federal supervision.
