Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a call with Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen on the first day of Berendsen's tenure. According to Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, Secretary Rubio congratulated Berendsen on his appointment and both officials reaffirmed the ongoing cooperation between the United States and the Netherlands.
The conversation covered topics including NATO, diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, and the Trump Administration’s three-phase plan for Venezuela.
The statement also noted the significance of 250 years of U.S. independence and 250 years of friendship with the Kingdom of the Netherlands. "Our nations are united by a shared dedication to freedom, democracy, and individual liberty—principles that have shaped our historic bond," according to Pigott. The United States extended its best wishes to Prime Minister Jetten and his cabinet in their new roles and expressed hope for continued partnership with the people of the Netherlands.
