Federal agencies launch initiative to track foreign gifts at U.S. universities

The U.S. Departments of Education and State have announced a new partnership aimed at improving transparency regarding foreign contributions to American universities and identifying potential security risks.

Chairman John Moolenaar of the House Select Committee on China commented on the development, stating, "China has given more than $6 billion to American universities as it seeks to infiltrate our campuses, promote its authoritarian agenda, and gain access to taxpayer-funded research. This new partnership is another example of how the Trump Administration is seriously challenging the threats from China and demanding more accountability from academic leaders who have allowed their campuses to be havens for China’s espionage efforts."

Earlier in the year, the Department of Education launched foreignfundinghighered.gov, a website that publishes information about foreign funding provided to U.S. universities. According to this resource, China ranks as the second largest donor with over $6 billion contributed.

The House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party is responsible for examining economic and security challenges posed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) while also developing policy recommendations. The committee proposes legislation designed to enhance U.S. competitiveness against the CCP and operates as a bipartisan group within the U.S. House of Representatives. Its work includes analyzing issues such as technology competition, supply chain stability, and national security threats by holding hearings and issuing reports. The committee's activities are detailed on its official website: https://chinaselectcommittee.house.gov/.
