Following President Trump's State of the Union address, Shannon McGahn, executive vice president and chief advocacy officer of the National Association of Realtors (NAR), commented on the focus given to housing issues.

"In a recent poll commissioned by NAR, eighty-five percent of American voters said they believe homeownership is central to the American Dream because it represents stability, upward mobility, and the opportunity to build generational wealth. The National Association of REALTORS is grateful that the President and members of Congress are focused on addressing the nation's housing affordability and supply challenges. We share the goal of increasing housing inventory at all price points and advancing policies that strengthen communities, grow local economies, and create opportunities rather than limit it.

"Unlocking existing inventory, streamlining regulatory barriers, incentivizing new construction, and supporting responsible development are all essential components of addressing housing affordability. That includes reforming outdated capital gains thresholds that have not been updated in decades and now discourage longtime homeowners from selling, reducing mobility and limiting the number of homes available for new buyers.

"NAR is encouraged that the House recently passed the Housing for the 21st Century Act, a bipartisan measure designed to reduce barriers to housing production and improve affordability nationwide. We will continue working collaboratively across party lines and focusing on practical, evidence-based solutions, lawmakers can help ensure that the promise of homeownership remains achievable for current and future generations of Americans."

The National Association of Realtors is recognized as a leading trade association in real estate with headquarters in Chicago and an office in Washington D.C., according to its official website. NAR works with about 1,200 local boards and 54 state and territorial associations nationwide. The organization supports diversity within its profession and provides resources such as research, statistics, advocacy initiatives, education programs, and news updates for its members. NAR aims to empower real estate professionals while protecting property rights across residential and commercial sectors.
