A Monticello, Iowa man was sentenced to federal prison after admitting to possessing six firearms, three of which were obtained through his grandmother. Jonathan Michael Clark, 32, pleaded guilty on September 3, 2025, to one count of possession of firearms by a prohibited person. The sentencing took place on February 19, 2026.
Court records indicate that Clark applied for a weapons permit in 2018 but was notified by the sheriff’s office that he was not allowed to possess guns. In June 2024, law enforcement officers entered Clark’s home to arrest him on an outstanding warrant and observed ammunition in plain view. A subsequent search led to the discovery of six firearms. Investigators determined that at least three of these guns came from Clark’s grandmother; she purchased two of them.
United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams presided over the sentencing in Cedar Rapids and imposed a sentence of 12 months and one day in prison for Clark. After serving his prison term, Clark will be required to complete three years of supervised release. Federal inmates are not eligible for parole. For now, Clark remains free on bond and is scheduled to report to the Bureau of Prisons at a later date.
The prosecution noted that this case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering cooperation among law enforcement agencies and communities nationwide. The Department strengthened PSN with a strategy launched on May 26, 2021, focusing on building community trust, supporting prevention efforts through local organizations, prioritizing targeted enforcement actions, and evaluating outcomes.
Assistant United States Attorney Kyndra Lundquist prosecuted the case following an investigation conducted by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.
