Houston man indicted for alleged assault on federal court security officer

A federal grand jury in Houston has indicted a 34-year-old man, Xavier Edmond, on charges related to the assault of a federal court security officer. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei for the Southern District of Texas.

Edmond remains in custody and is expected to appear for arraignment soon. According to allegations, on February 4, Edmond tried to bypass security screening at the Bob Casey Federal Courthouse in Houston. When a court security officer attempted to escort him from the lobby area, Edmond allegedly swung his fists, pushed the officer, and threatened to kill him. The indictment further states that Edmond spit on the officer before additional security intervened and arrested him.

If convicted, Edmond could face up to eight years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

The Department of Homeland Security – Federal Protective Service led the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Martin is prosecuting the case.

"An indictment is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. A defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law," according to officials.

The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas handles prosecution of federal crimes and civil cases involving government interests across 43 counties with offices in several cities including Houston and Galveston. The office employs over 200 attorneys serving a population exceeding nine million people in the region and operates as part of the U.S. Department of Justice under the Attorney General’s direction.

Past leaders of this office have included Alamdar Hamdani (2022–2025) and Ryan Patrick, among others (official history page).
