Lake County man receives nearly four-year sentence for illegal firearm possession

Kevin Eugene Leeks, Jr., a 34-year-old resident of Leesburg, has been sentenced to three years and ten months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber after Leeks pleaded guilty on October 31, 2025.

Leeks has been a convicted felon since 2013, with previous convictions including robbery with a deadly weapon. According to court records, on July 13, 2019, a Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped the vehicle Leeks was driving. During the stop, Leeks told a passenger to throw his loaded pistol out of the car window. The deputy recovered the firearm and arrested Leeks at the scene. Federal law prohibits convicted felons from possessing firearms or ammunition.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office investigated this case. Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk Watson prosecuted it.

U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the sentencing.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that brings together law enforcement agencies and community members to reduce violent crime and gun violence while aiming to make neighborhoods safer for all residents. The Department launched an updated violent crime reduction strategy for PSN on May 26, 2021, which focuses on building trust within communities, supporting organizations that work to prevent violence before it occurs, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
