Mexican national charged with illegal voting in Alabama federal case

A Mexican national living in Marion County, Alabama, has been arrested and appeared in federal court after being charged with illegally voting in multiple elections as a non-citizen. The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Catherine L. Crosby.

According to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court, Homero Ramos, 51, is a lawful permanent resident but has never obtained United States citizenship. Despite this, authorities allege that Ramos registered to vote and cast ballots while knowing that only U.S. citizens are allowed to participate in elections under Alabama law. Records from the Alabama Secretary of State and the Probate Court of Marion County indicate that Ramos voted in both the 2022 and 2024 general elections.

The investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations with assistance from the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Brett A. Janich is handling the prosecution.

If convicted, Ramos faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison for the offense charged.

“A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law,” stated officials.
