Since February 28, more than 32,000 American citizens have returned to the United States from the Middle East, according to a statement from Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson. This number does not include Americans who have relocated to other countries or those still traveling back to the U.S.

The Department of State has organized nearly two dozen charter flights and evacuated thousands of Americans from the region. While commercial flight options are becoming more available, government-run charter flights and ground transport operations are increasing as security conditions permit.

Assistant Secretary Johnson noted that over half of the American citizens who requested assistance declined transportation offered by the U.S. Government when contacted. Some chose to remain in their current locations, while others preferred different departure methods.

Through its 24/7 Task Force, the State Department has provided direct support to over 19,000 Americans abroad with security guidance and travel assistance.

"Through the State Department’s 24/7 Task Force, we have directly assisted over 19,000 Americans abroad, offering security guidance and travel assistance."

The department encourages American citizens in Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Israel who need help with travel arrangements to complete the Crisis Intake Form.

"The State Department will continue to actively assist any American citizen who wishes to depart the Middle East to do so."
