The U.S. Department of State announced on Mar. 9 that more than 36,000 American citizens have safely returned to the United States from the Middle East since February 28.

The announcement highlights ongoing efforts by the State Department to assist Americans seeking to leave the region. The department said it has completed over two dozen charter flights and continues to operate both charter flight and ground transport options for those in need.

According to the statement, commercial flight availability across the Middle East is improving, and many Americans are choosing these options instead of government-organized charters. "At this time, seats available on the Department’s charter options are significantly greater than the demand from Americans in the region. Many Americans continue to depart on commercial options," Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson said.

The department also reported that most Americans who requested assistance ultimately declined when offered, opting either to remain in their current location or book commercial flights independently. Through its 24/7 Task Force, the State Department has directly assisted over 23,000 Americans abroad with security guidance and travel support.

American citizens located in Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Israel who require travel assistance are encouraged to complete a Crisis Intake Form. The department emphasized its commitment to helping any American citizen wishing to depart from the Middle East.

For further assistance, Americans in need can contact the U.S. Department of State at +1-202-501-4444 at any time.
