Diane J. Sabatino highlights CBP actions against agricultural pests and narcotics smuggling

Executive Assistant Commissioner Diane J. Sabatino has used her social media platform to highlight the efforts of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in safeguarding agriculture and combating narcotics smuggling. In a series of posts on March 8 and March 9, 2026, Sabatino underscored the work of CBP officers and specialists at various ports.

On March 8, Sabatino drew attention to the threat posed by invasive pests, stating, "#DYK: the New World Screwworm pest can devastate livestock and wildlife? @CBP’s dedicated agriculture specialists work tirelessly to detect and intercept potential threats, ensuring the safety of U.S. agriculture. #OFOProud"

Later that day, she reported on a drug interdiction effort at a port in Puerto Rico: "SHAMPOO SHENANIGANS We'd lather you didn't hide your coke in shampoo bottles, but we're not scratching our heads on it! @DFOSanJuan officers at the Port of Mayagüez noticed a strong chemical smell when inspecting a parcel manifested--14 pounds of diluted cocaine. #OFOProud" The post highlights how officers identified narcotics concealed within personal care products during routine inspections.

On March 9, Sabatino reiterated the importance of border enforcement for national safety: "Border security is national security. @CBP's success at interdicting narcotics reflects joint enforcement efforts across our agency and our enduring commitment to protecting our communities. #OFOProud"

The New World Screwworm is an insect pest known for infesting warm-blooded animals; its introduction into U.S. territory could threaten both livestock industries and wildlife populations by causing severe wounds that can be fatal if untreated.

Drug interdiction remains a significant focus for CBP officers stationed at U.S. ports of entry such as those in Puerto Rico, where smugglers attempt various concealment methods to bypass detection.

Sabatino serves as Executive Assistant Commissioner for CBP’s Office of Field Operations, which is responsible for securing America’s borders through inspections at over 300 ports nationwide.
