Stephen Herring, a 26-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., was sentenced on March 6 to 21 years in prison for the killing of Marcus Thurman in August 2023, according to an announcement made by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro on Mar. 9.

The case centers on a violent incident that occurred outside 140 M Street, NE, where Herring fatally stabbed Thurman after an altercation involving a woman and her infant son. The sentencing highlights the consequences of violent acts and the legal response to such crimes in the District of Columbia.

According to government evidence presented in court, police responded at approximately 5:10 am on August 22, 2023, to reports of a stabbing. Officers found Thurman unconscious with a stab wound to his upper chest. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene and subsequent treatment at Washington Hospital Center, Thurman died from his injuries on September 4, 2023.

The investigation revealed that Herring had assaulted a female victim before Thurman intervened in an attempt to protect her and her baby. Herring left the area but soon returned armed with a knife and stabbed Thurman. Surveillance footage captured the attack and multiple eyewitnesses identified Herring as the suspect before he fled the scene.

U.S. Attorney Pirro was joined by Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department in announcing the sentence. Both officials commended investigators from the Metropolitan Police Department and thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Nebiyu Feleke for prosecuting the case.

Herring pleaded guilty on November 7, 2025, to one count of second-degree murder while armed in Superior Court of the District of Columbia. In addition to his prison term, he will serve five years of supervised release.
