A member of the Zuni Pueblo, Glendon Laate, pleaded guilty on Mar. 10 to voluntary manslaughter for the shooting death of an individual described as John Doe.

The case is significant because it involves a fatal incident within the Zuni community and highlights federal prosecution of violent crimes in tribal areas.

According to court documents, Laate, age 49, shot and killed John Doe with a homemade shotgun on December 1, 2024. The act was committed in the heat of passion. Laate now faces up to 15 years in prison at sentencing.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, announced the plea agreement. The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office investigated the case with help from the Zuni Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Meg Tomlinson and Michael Pahl are prosecuting.

The outcome underscores ongoing efforts by federal authorities to address violent crime within Native American communities.
