The U.S. Department of State announced on Mar. 10 that more than 40,000 American citizens have safely returned to the United States from the Middle East since February 28.

The announcement highlights ongoing efforts by the State Department to assist Americans seeking to leave the region. The department said it has completed over two dozen charter flights and continues to operate both charter flights and ground transport operations, even as commercial flight availability improves across the Middle East.

According to the statement, demand for seats on State Department charter options is now significantly lower than available capacity, with many Americans choosing commercial flights or opting to remain in their current locations. The department noted that its charter flights are operating at less than 40 percent occupancy on average. "Most Americans who have requested assistance have declined assistance when offered, opting either to remain in country or book more convenient commercial flight options," Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson said.

The State Department’s 24/7 Task Force has directly assisted over 27,000 Americans abroad by providing security guidance and travel support. Officials emphasized that they will continue to help any American citizen wishing to depart the Middle East.

Americans in need of assistance are encouraged to contact the U.S. Department of State at +1-202-501-4444 for support at any time.
