Sessions announces hearing on financial future of U.S. Postal Service

Subcommittee on Government Operations Chairman Pete Sessions announced on Mar. 12 that a hearing will be held to examine the financial future of the U.S. Postal Service under Postmaster General David Steiner. The hearing, titled “Oversight of the U.S. Postal Service: The Financial Future Under Postmaster General Steiner,” is scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. EDT in HVC-210 at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center.

The topic is important as the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has been facing significant financial challenges, losing billions of dollars and experiencing increasing reliability concerns. Lawmakers plan to review what steps are being taken by USPS leadership to address these issues and whether further borrowing from the Department of the Treasury should be permitted.

“Americans all over the country rely on the U.S. Postal Service to efficiently deliver packages safely and on time. USPS is rapidly losing money and becoming more unreliable each year and is dire need of a course-correction. While some progress has been made to improve USPS operations, there is still much more work to be done to reform the agency and make up for the billions it has already lost. The Government Operations Subcommittee remains committed on a bipartisan basis to transform and modernize USPS, and I look forward to hearing from Mr. Steiner on his plans to improve its dependability,” said Subcommittee Chairman Sessions.

Witnesses scheduled for the hearing include David Steiner, Postmaster General of the U.S. Postal Service, and David Marroni, Director of Physical Infrastructure at the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

The hearing will be open to the public and livestreamed online.
