Man federally charged with assaulting officers at Dallas Love Field security checkpoint

A man has been federally charged with assaulting a federal officer at Dallas Love Field Airport after he allegedly punched two Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers and seriously injured a Dallas police officer while attempting to proceed through security without identification, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Ryan Raybould announced on Mar. 13.

The case highlights concerns about the safety of law enforcement and TSA personnel working in airports, as well as the challenges they face when travelers become disruptive or violent during security procedures.

According to a federal complaint filed this week, Idress Vinay Solomon, 33, of Oakland, California, was ticketed for a Southwest Airlines flight to Oakland International Airport on March 10. Solomon approached the security checkpoint at Dallas Love Field without any identification. A TSA officer directed him to another lane so that his identity could be verified using TSA’s ConfirmID process. When this process failed, Solomon allegedly became verbally disruptive and aggressive.

“Violent conduct perpetrated against TSA and law enforcement officers will never be tolerated in the Northern District of Texas,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould. “We will prosecute such offenses to the fullest extent to seek justice for the victims here and to deter others from resorting to aggressive attacks against officers responsible for ensuring the public’s safety while traveling.”

The complaint alleges that after a supervisor was called due to Solomon’s escalating behavior, he punched a TSA officer in the back of the neck. Dallas Police Department officers responded and one was allegedly punched multiple times in the face by Solomon, resulting in a serious orbital blowout fracture that required medical treatment at Parkland Hospital. The complaint further states that Solomon then punched another TSA officer before being subdued by additional police officers. Surveillance video reportedly captured these assaults.

Solomon was eventually handcuffed and arrested. While being placed into a police vehicle, he allegedly spit saliva onto an officer’s arm and continued resisting even after being restrained. If convicted, Solomon faces up to 20 years in federal prison for forcibly assaulting a federal officer and inflicting bodily injury. He remains in custody pending further court proceedings.

The investigation is being conducted by TSA, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Dallas Police Department (DPD). The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas is prosecuting the case.

A complaint is merely an allegation of criminal conduct; all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
