U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor will travel to Sri Lanka and Maldives from March 19 to 24 for a series of high-level meetings, according to a March 18 announcement.
The visit aims to strengthen cooperation in the Indian Ocean region, focusing on security, trade, and diplomatic ties between the United States and both countries.
While in Sri Lanka, Gor is scheduled to meet with senior leaders to reaffirm the importance of the U.S.-Sri Lanka relationship. The meetings are expected to focus on safeguarding sea lanes, securing ports, reinforcing trade relations, and supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific region. "Special Envoy Gor’s meetings will further support U.S. efforts to safeguard vital sea lanes and secure ports, reinforce mutually beneficial trade and commercial ties, and advance a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific for the benefit of both our peoples," the statement said.
In Maldives, Gor will hold discussions with senior government officials aimed at advancing security cooperation and exploring opportunities for economic growth. The visit also marks the commemoration of 60 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Maldives. According to the statement: "Special Envoy Gor will meet with senior government officials to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to the bilateral relationship, advance security cooperation, and explore opportunities to support Maldives’ efforts to promote its critical infrastructure and expand its economy, as well as to commemorate 60 years of diplomatic ties."
The United States emphasized its ongoing partnerships with both Sri Lanka and Maldives as part of broader efforts toward regional stability. "The United States values its enduring partnerships with Sri Lanka and Maldives and our shared commitment to regional security and stability," according to the announcement.
