Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer hosted a forum on Mar. 26 with Senator Peter Welch and several experts to discuss how climate change is affecting the affordability crisis for American families.

The event highlighted concerns about rising costs in areas such as home insurance, groceries, health care, and utility bills. The senators said these increases are linked to both climate change impacts and policies favoring fossil fuels.

Whitehouse said, “Consumers don’t just pay for fossil fuel corruption at the pump; they pay for it on their utility bills, at the hospital, in the grocery aisles, and at home.” He added that recent policy decisions have shifted support away from clean energy projects toward fossil fuels. Schumer said, “Clean energy is not just the healthier and more efficient option – it’s also the most affordable,” adding that actions against clean energy are making everyday expenses higher while harming public health.

Expert witnesses included Dr. Kim Clausing of UCLA School of Law; Dr. Vijay Limaye from the Natural Resources Defense Council; Dr. Andrew Pershing of Climate Central; and Andreanecia Morris from HousingNOLA. Clausing discussed research showing that climate change has increased average household costs by nearly $900 per year in some regions due to higher prices in healthcare, groceries, housing construction delays related to immigration policies, repealed clean energy tax credits raising utility bills, and increased gas prices linked to international conflict.

Limaye described how health-related damages from air pollution caused by burning coal, oil, and gas result in over $800 billion annually in costs nationwide: “Our research shows that these financial costs are not only a future concern—they are already burdening American households - no matter what kind of insurance they have.” Pershing spoke about long-term effects on food production: "Climate impacts will grow and compound each year until carbon pollution stops." Morris warned that Louisiana’s struggles with unaffordable or unavailable insurance could soon affect other states: "These are the not-so-hidden costs of climate change: higher operating costs for households, and systemic instability for entire regions.”

According to the official website, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee maintains its administrative base in the Senate Dirksen Office Building to support hearings and operations. The committee oversees federal programs related to environmental quality as well as infrastructure needs according to its official website. Shelley Moore Capito currently chairs this committee alongside members such as Kevin Cramer and Cynthia Lummis according to its official website. Legislation handled by this committee affects environmental regulations across all states according to its official website.

Looking ahead, participants suggested ongoing efforts would be needed at both legislative levels and within communities nationwide. The broader implication is that unless action is taken regarding emissions reduction or adaptation strategies through federal policy—areas influenced by this committee—costs may continue rising for families.
