Incarcerated individual dies at USP Hazelton in West Virginia

Jerome Jones was found unresponsive at the United States Penitentiary Hazelton in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia, on March 17, according to a statement from the Bureau of Prisons.

Responding employees initiated life-saving measures and requested emergency medical services while continuing their efforts. Jones was transported by EMS to a local hospital and was pronounced deceased on March 18 by hospital personnel. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified following the incident.

The Bureau of Prisons said no employees or other incarcerated individuals were injured during the incident and that at no time was the public in danger. Jones, age 35, had been sentenced in the Western District of Tennessee to an aggregate 330-month sentence for carjacking and carrying and using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, specifically carjacking. He had been held at USP Hazelton since April 7, 2025.
