The Bureau of Prisons announced that Rocco Scolamacchia Jr. was found unresponsive at the Federal Detention Center Philadelphia on March 21 at approximately 11:10 a.m.
Employees responded by initiating life-saving measures and requested emergency medical services while continuing their efforts. Scolamacchia was transported by EMS to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased by hospital personnel.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Marshals Service were notified following the incident. The Bureau said no employees or other incarcerated individuals were injured, and there was no danger to the public at any time.
Scolamacchia, a 49-year-old male, had arrived at FDC Philadelphia on March 12 under pretrial status after being indicted for Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. He was an unsentenced inmate at the time of his death. FDC Philadelphia is described as an administrative security facility.
