President Donald J. Trump issued a message on March 29 to mark National Vietnam War Veterans Day, honoring the service and sacrifice of Americans who fought in the Vietnam War.

The day serves as a reminder of the courage and resilience displayed by millions of American service members during one of the most challenging periods in U.S. military history. The president's statement reflects on their role in defending freedom and halting the spread of communism.

"Beginning in 1965, millions of American heroes courageously departed their homeland and arrived in the jungles of Vietnam to halt the spread of communism and defend the cause of freedom against forces of evil and oppression," Trump said. He noted that after eight years, "the last United States military forces withdrew, and our final prisoners of war were released—solidifying their place in history as gallant warriors for liberty and guardians against tyranny." The president added, "This National Vietnam War Veterans Day, we solemnly honor these patriots for their extraordinary courage, steadfast resilience, and unbreakable bond of brotherhood while enduring one of the most gruesome combat experiences in American history."

Trump described how U.S. troops faced extreme conditions such as heat, monsoon rains, difficult terrain, and guerilla warfare tactics over nearly a decade. He said that more than 58,000 Americans were killed and over 300,000 wounded during what he called "one of the deadliest engagements that our military has ever seen." The president also addressed how many veterans did not receive proper recognition upon returning home: "After valiantly serving through such brutal combat, many Vietnam veterans returned home without the welcome and gratitude that they so rightly deserved and had earned. Today, we pledge that their service—and the service of every veteran—will never be forgotten or diminished."

He highlighted his administration’s actions to support veterans since returning to office last year: "We are expanding access to care, opening more than 30 new veteran health clinics to date across the country," Trump said. He also mentioned efforts such as constructing a new center for homeless veterans by 2028; reducing backlogs at Veterans Affairs; processing record numbers of disability claims; launching an online portal for claims assistance; and agreements between agencies aimed at helping vulnerable veterans.

The message concluded with a reaffirmation: "Today we stand united in gratitude for courageous service... As we celebrate 250 glorious years... we reaffirm our Nation’s sacred promise to always support and honor every hero who has fought in defense of our freedom... You will always have my unfailing loyalty and support."
