Sudbury man pleads guilty to $7.8 million embezzlement from medical practices

Leah B. Foley United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts | Department of Justice

Adam Gentile, a 39-year-old resident of Sudbury and formerly of Hudson, pleaded guilty on Mar. 31 in federal court in Worcester to three counts of wire fraud related to the theft of more than $7.8 million from two former employers, both medical practices.

Gentile admitted to carrying out the scheme over nearly a decade, which authorities say involved issuing himself extra paychecks and using company funds for personal expenses. The case highlights concerns about internal controls and oversight within small businesses and medical offices.

According to prosecutors, Gentile was first hired as an administrative assistant at a medical practice in or around 2014 before being promoted to office manager. From approximately 2015 through November 2020, he embezzled over $4.5 million by issuing unauthorized payments labeled as “bonuses” and paying off his personal credit cards with the employer’s bank account.

In 2021, Gentile took a similar position at another medical practice where he had sole responsibility for payroll processing. Between April 2021 and May 2024, he executed a comparable scheme that resulted in the theft of more than $3.3 million by making extra payroll payments to himself—sometimes marked as “bonuses”—and using company funds for home purchases, upgrades, credit card payments, and investments in his side business.

Gentile faces up to 20 years in prison for each count of wire fraud along with up to three years supervised release and fines up to $250,000 or twice the gross loss involved. Sentencing is scheduled for July 16 before U.S. District Judge Margaret R. Guzman.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley announced the plea alongside Ted E. Docks, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Boston Division; valuable assistance was provided by the Leominster Police Department.
