BSEE monitors record offshore oil production to ensure safety and compliance

Offshore oil production on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf reached a new high of 714 million barrels in 2025, according to an April 1 announcement by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE). The agency said it is working to ensure that this increased activity meets all federal safety and environmental regulations.

The rise in production highlights the importance of offshore energy development for the United States, with deepwater projects in the Gulf of Mexico playing a major role. As more projects begin operations and existing facilities reach peak output, BSEE staff are closely monitoring conditions to make sure industry standards are upheld.

“Under the Trump Administration’s Energy Dominance agenda, record offshore production is helping strengthen American energy security while supporting thousands of good-paying jobs,” said BSEE Acting Director Kenny Stevens. “BSEE’s role is to ensure this development is carried out safely and responsibly, with strong oversight that protects workers and the environment.”

The bureau oversees various aspects of offshore operations such as facility inspections, well control systems, equipment testing, and safety reviews. Using a risk-based approach allows BSEE inspectors, engineers, and scientists to prioritize their efforts across complex offshore environments.

According to BSEE's statement, activities on the Outer Continental Shelf continue to support jobs, economic growth, and a reliable energy supply for the country. The agency said it remains committed to protecting workers at sea as well as coastal communities while safeguarding natural resources during energy development.
