Dominican national sentenced to prison for illegal reentry after deportation

Leah B. Foley United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts | Department of Justice

A Dominican national living in Lawrence, Massachusetts, was sentenced on April 2 in federal court in Boston for unlawfully reentering the United States after being deported.

Jose Alberto Tejeda Turbi, age 46, received an 18-month prison sentence from U.S. District Court Judge Allison D. Burroughs. He will also serve two years of supervised release and faces deportation upon completion of his sentence. Tejeda Turbi pleaded guilty in March to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien following his indictment by a federal grand jury in January.

This case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address unlawful reentry into the United States after prior removal. According to the announcement, "United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and David T. Wesling, Acting Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston made the announcement." Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad A. Rocheville prosecuted the case.

Tejeda Turbi's legal history includes a July 2015 conviction for heroin distribution and conspiracy in federal court in Boston, which resulted in a five-year prison term followed by four years of supervised release. He was removed from the country upon completing that sentence in March 2020 but returned illegally at an unspecified date afterward.

In June 2024, Tejeda Turbi was sentenced again—this time by Lawrence District Court—to two years' imprisonment for assault and battery causing serious bodily injury as well as three years' probation on other charges.

The sentencing underscores ongoing enforcement actions related to immigration violations involving individuals with prior criminal convictions.
