Tops Friendly Markets announced on Apr. 1 a recall of all codes of Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic and Garland Fresh Peeled Garlic because the products may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The company said the possible contamination is due to the product being kept at insufficient temperatures.
The recall is important because Clostridium botulinum can cause botulism, a potentially fatal illness. Symptoms include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, trouble speaking or swallowing, difficulty breathing, muscle weakness, abdominal distension and constipation. Consumers are advised not to eat the recalled garlic even if it does not look or smell spoiled.
According to Tops Friendly Markets, the affected products were distributed through Tops Markets in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont. The recalled items include Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic in 6-ounce plastic bags with UPC 74574-10852 and Garland Fresh Peeled Garlic in 6-ounce plastic bags with UPCs 71894-00000 and 68826-75340. All product code dates are included in the recall.
The issue was found during a routine store inspection when it was observed that some garlic packages were not stored at proper temperatures needed to control this hazard. There have been no reported illnesses linked to these products so far.
Customers who purchased these items can return them for a full refund. For questions about the recall, consumers can contact Tops Consumer Affairs at 1-800-522-2522. The company said this recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration.
